Kentucky native Tom Bulleit founded Bulleit bourbon in 1987, resurrecting a 150-year-old family tradition that made his great-great-grandfather, Augustus Bulleit, a successful distiller in the Louisville, Ky., area until his death in 1860.

Bulleit calls for a traditional but expensive high-rye mash bill, combined with Kentucky’s limestone filtered water, fresh from the Salt River, and a special strain of yeast. It is aged six years in charred oak barrels to produce a rich, subtly complex flavor profile.
