The image of only older men sipping on whiskey is slowly fading as the spirit continues to expand its horizons, bringing in younger — and even female — consumers, thanks to new ways of serving the spirit.

For years, whiskey was more often than not consumed in simple ways, such as straight up, on the rocks or with a mixer. There also were the classic cocktails, such as the Manhattan.

The whiskey itself, too, was basic.
