After nearly 80 years, the three tiers of Ohio’s alcohol distribution system are about to get a little more distinct.

When it takes effect on July 30, Senate Bill 48 will prohibit brewers from acquiring a wholesaler’s license and operating as a wholesale distributor. To widen the gap between brewers and retailers even more, the bill limits direct-to-retail sales only to brewers making fewer than 1 million barrels a year. Basically, that’s everybody but the state’s two biggest brewers, Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors.
