Adults Should Have Same Rights

As Americans prepare for the Fourth of July, a celebration of their “inalienable rights” of “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness,” it is a good time to remember a segment of adult society which enjoys only partial rights.

While 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds are considered “adults” for nearly every other purpose — they can vote, sign contracts, fight in combat, file lawsuits, decide for themselves about medical treatment — they cannot legally purchase alcohol.
