American Made, Foreign Owned
What do Firestone tires, Pilot pens, Slurpees and Jim Beam have in common? They are all owned — or in the case of Beam, soon likely to be owned — by Japanese companies.
The board of directors of Beam Inc. announced earlier this month it had agreed to be acquired by Japan’s Suntory Holdings. That means that, pending Beam shareholder approval, whiskies such as Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek will join a portfolio with the likes of Yamazaki, Hibiki and Kakubin.
