Kasich Calls for Tobacco Tax Increase
COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. John Kasich last month proposed an increase in the state’s excise on tobacco products during a mid-biennium review.
Under Kasich’s tax reform proposal, the cigarette tax would increase over two years from $1.25 per pack to $1.85. Additionally, the tax on other tobacco products, including previously untaxed e-cigarettes, would rise to the level of the cigarette tax. The tax rate on other tobacco products currently is 17 percent of the wholesale price.
Ohio currently ranks 26th nationally for its cigarette tax rate, according to the Tax Foundation.
