LONDON (PRNewswire) — Phillipines-based brandy maker Emperador Inc. last month acquired the Whyte & Mackay Scotch whisky brand for $729 million from Diageo.

Diageo was forced to sell Whyte & Mackay as the result of a ruling by the UK’s Office of Fair Trading, which determined Diageo’s ownership of the brand, along with the other Scotch whiskys in its portfolio, could lessen competition in the Scotch whisky category. Diageo acquired Whyte & Mackay in late 2012 when it purchased a major stake in the brand’s parent company, India’s United Spirits.
